    ◉ Introduction and objectives:

    In this article, we briefly describe the invention of a system for using the mechanical energy of the wind pressure output from air conditioning turbines in metro stations to recycle wasted energy (wind) and return it to the electricity generation cycle.


    There are many natural and unnatural potentials around us that with a little attention and creativity we can achieve the best efficiency of their use. Many of the inherent potentials in nature or those that are the result of technological achievements of modern life are still untapped for use. The speed of growth and dependence of new technologies on various energy sources has caused the ideators and creators of scientific theories to present various solutions to achieve sustainable and environmentally friendly sources in the field of energy. In this article, I tried to show a creative solution for producing clean energy that can cover part of the electricity consumption capacity in metro stations.

    If we look carefully at the natural or artificial physical or chemical reactions around us, we will see that a large part of the dynamic outcome of these reactions is wasted without use. Although experts in various industrial fields try to achieve maximum operational efficiency from the energy production cycle as much as possible, but despite the high costs there are still many industrial interactions in the world in which the "self-driving energy potential" in their activity cycle is wasted without use, and in fact no attention is paid to the recycling of these hidden potentials.


    Recycling the consumed energy (if it has economic justification and potential feasibility) can save on main and side costs, and solve the concern of regenerating energy for a part of the total consumption. One of the infrastructures where a large part of the consumed energy is wasted is the central ventilation systems in metro stations and the ventilation branches in the underground tunnels leading to the station. The idea of ​​creating an invention to recover mechanical energy from the subway ventilation outlet was formed in my mind when a few years ago, I noticed a strong wind after exiting one of the northern stations of the Tehran Metro (capital of Iran) on the sidewalk when I came across the underground ventilation outlet. At that place, a very strong wind was being generated by the air outlet fans.

    The intensity of the physical reaction of this wind was so great that it bent the arrangement of trees along the sidewalk. At that moment, I remembered the cycle of operation of wind turbines, which generate energy using wind intensity much lower than what I had experienced in front of that station. Certainly, the output of targeted and controlled movement of air masses to create suction or pressure in the production cycle can be used as a fuel input for activity in another production cycle and unfortunately, there are many such potentials in urban infrastructure or large industries that are easily wasted due to lack of attention to energy recycling.


    Natural winds are one of the blessings of this world that exist in almost all parts of the globe with varying intensities and differences in displacement pressure. Of course, in some areas of the globe, there is little wind pressure due to the lack of sufficient potential for the movement of two warm and cold air masses. In fact, the daily wind cycle is a clear example of non-uniform heating on the surface of the globe, which continuously moves towards equilibrium in the temperature of the two warm and cold fronts and with this displacement, they create what we know as "wind". On a global scale, because the lands near the equator are warmer than the lands near the North and South Poles, the temperature difference in these two warm and cold regions leads to the creation of atmospheric winds that are rotating around the Earth.

    As mentioned at the end of the introduction above, the intensity and amount of natural wind generation requires an area to be within a range of pressure and temperature differences because as warm air increases, low pressure remains within a certain range and since the atmosphere is always moving towards equilibrium and moving air from high pressure to low pressure to fill the gap. This movement between low pressure and high pressure leads to the production of wind, which is a process called diffusion. It is clear that the speed and intensity of the wind in the diffusion process is directly related to the speed of movement of warm air masses to cold air because with the change in temperature in the Earth's atmosphere, the heating of gases and atoms and molecules accelerates and they move upwards with a wide diffusion. In contrast, when the air is cold, the movement of gases, atoms and molecules slows down and comes closer together, which leads to the descent of cold air and the creation of natural winds.


    But to produce energy from wind, we do not always need natural winds with the above-mentioned characteristics because there are also winds around us that are the result of mechanical interactions of industries and urban infrastructure. In some areas of densely populated and busy cities, winds are also being produced continuously and at variable pressure levels, which are the result of continuous physical movements such as fast and continuous traffic of cars on highways, trains, large ventilation turbines and cooling fans of various chillers and water and gas coolers. In other words, the potential for unnatural wind resulting from industry or infrastructure of metropolitan cities exists in most parts of the world, but what is important is how to use this potential to recycle and regenerate energy.

    One of these sources of wind production, which, according to my experience, also has a very high potential for generating mechanical energy, is the outlet of the air conditioning duct turbines in metro stations. Usually, ventilation facilities (air pressure and suction) are mounted in the upper space of underground metro stations to shorten the distance between the duct and the underground halls, and to achieve the best efficiency of exhausting unsuitable air upwards and bringing in fresh air downwards, because as we know, in densely populated cities, underground metro halls and corridors are usually full of people (traveling or waiting to move).


    On the other hand, health problems and serious risks for passengers, especially the elderly and those with heart and respiratory diseases, will arise if proper ventilation and air movement in corridors, halls and even train tunnels are not carried out. Therefore, large government companies or urban metro contractors pay great attention to the design of complex underground air conditioning systems. These systems, by having very powerful suction turbines or creating air pressure underground, cause continuous rotation and replacement of healthy and fresh air with stagnant air (mixed with carbon dioxide or other harmful gases) underground.

    As can be seen in the video at the end of this article, I have created a 3D simulation of the unhealthy air exit path in the form of an animation, which can easily show the importance of the powerful air suction systems mounted throughout the hall and inside the tunnel, as well as how they work. Usually, a powerful air suction fan is mounted at the entrance of each channel to direct the unhealthy air towards the central suction engine room channel. Of course, in some stations, depending on the area and dimensions of length, width and height, as well as the volume of passenger traffic, the number of these fans at the entrance of the channels is less or more. However, in large metro stations, there is a central suction engine room in the middle of the route for maximum air suction upwards to the air conditioning outlet on the ground level.

    Although such diverse and sometimes complex air supply systems are very energy-intensive and consume a high amount of electricity due to the use of powerful and large turbines, there is no doubt about the necessity of using them despite the high electricity consumption. The noteworthy point is that we can recover part of this high energy consumption by suction turbines and convert it into energy return for electricity generation. Using the energy recovered from the idea I have proposed in this article, we can allocate electricity re-generation at the metro stations for various uses, including lighting corridors, office rooms, commercial cabins and underground halls, and reduce part of the metro station's consumption from the urban distribution network.

    The stale air in the station halls or tunnels is usually drawn out by large fans or turbines in several stages of suction. Usually, the outlet turbines are larger in terms of impeller size than the underground fans and turbines. This helps to move the air volume with greater pressure when it reaches the outlet of the large ventilation ducts. The fans or turbines located on the ground are located directly in the path of the air pressure moving upward from the underground. These large outlet openings are usually oriented upwards (vertically) or, as I have experienced, horizontally or longitudinally.


    The intensity of the air pressure in front of these air outlets is very high and sometimes it affects anything in front of it for more than 10 or 15 meters with strong physical vibrations. For example, my hair was combed and neat before reaching the outlet, but after walking ten meters parallel to the outlet, I realized that my hair was no longer neat and was completely messy, as if I had been a guest of a strong storm or had been thrown out of a tornado! Also, the high wind pressure slightly disturbed my balance in walking. Such a unique energy made me think at that moment and once again I preferred to get a more accurate experience from inside this storm and then this question came to me: why do we waste such powerful energy so easily? I stood there and used my imagination to mentally draw a design for transferring a wind turbine equipped with a generator to produce electricity in front of the outlet of the central ventilation outlet.

    As can be seen in the images in this article and also in the animation video of this idea, we can use a powerful wind turbine to harness this energy, which is released as a strong wind front in horizontal and vertical coordinates. Wind turbines have different structures and are suitable for winds of different levels, and they can easily rotate when placed in front of low-pressure winds and can transfer mechanical energy in the form of a powerful torque through the central shaft to the generator rotor. Now, if a wind turbine with the above specifications is placed in front of the strong wind pressure of the subway ventilation outlet, then the wind turbine shaft will rotate at maximum speed and efficiency and ultimately transfer a very powerful torque to the generator rotor to generate electricity.


    Considering the intensity of the wind pressure of the ventilation outlet, it is possible to calculate and create an appropriate distance between the wind turbine and the ventilation outlet to prevent the unwanted creation of any additional frictional pressures. Considering the principle of the possibility of the occurrence of counter-pressure of other frictional forces in close proximity to a pressure generating source, observing the appropriate distance between the wind turbine and the suction fans can prevent the occurrence of any frictional force that imposes additional pressure on the suction fans. In addition to this advantage, observing the distance causes the wind pressure exiting the ventilation outlet to cover the entire curvature of the long turbine blade surface with an equal and wide distribution so that the turbine shaft achieves a powerful and fast movement in a regular rotation sequence.


    Finally, the mechanical energy produced by the wind turbine blades is transferred to the electricity generator and then consumed through an internal voltage distribution network for various uses in the metro station or it can be stored in new generation batteries for specific uses. It is clear that this amount of energy recovery cannot cover the entire energy needs of a large metro station, but without a doubt this idea can reduce a large part of the power consumption at each metro station and help reduce the pressure on the national electricity distribution network.

    The heavy dependence on energy from large power generation networks in each country has led to the annual use of a larger volume of fossil fuels in large power plants, which is the main factor polluting the environment. Undoubtedly, with excessive dependence on fossil fuels and lack of attention to recycling and restoring wasted energy, irreparable risks and damage to the Earth's climate will remain for many years. Using new ideas for producing clean energy or recycling energy, such as the idea I shared with everyone, can reduce pollution and pave the way for growth and the creation of more ideas.


    Like other inventions and ideas, this invention/idea also has the potential for further development and optimization. Using the "electricity generation system from the output of air conditioning turbines in metro stations" can greatly help solve the problem of high energy consumption, prevent air pollution, and profit from the energy recovery cycle throughout the planet.
